13-1/2 years ago I received a phone call that I’ll never forget! Our adoption agency called to let us know a baby had been relinquished at a Police Department by a woman who handed her baby to staff members there. We were next on our agency’s list and if we wanted this baby then it was ours. I was so excited, I didn’t even think to ask any questions! I didn’t even know the sex of the baby, I just knew we really wanted and were ready for this baby. At that time we knew nothing about the Safe Haven law.
I ran out the door to tell my husband, “We have a baby! We have a baby!” He asked me, “is it a boy or a girl?”. I didn’t know! I can’t believe I hadn’t thought to ask! I didn’t even know if it was a boy or a girl. I was just so excited that we were getting our baby. When we went to the hospital we found out it was a little girl. She was so gorgeous. We named her Anjel after the angels watching over her birth mother leading her to make the right decision. I thought then…and I know now…that was the most unselfish act a mother could ever do. Anjel was healthy and beautiful and I feel it took a very strong woman to make the hard decision to relinquish her child to appropriate authorities by using the Safe Haven law. Every day I thank God for this law and I thank God for Anjel’s birth mother. We will forever be so grateful to her.
