On a rainy day when I was away on business, my life changed dramatically with one text from my wife. She was trying to reach me to tell me our adoption agency had a possible placement for us.
Two days earlier a newborn baby boy had been dropped off at a safe haven location because his mother could not care for him. Details were few but the baby was alert and healthy if not a little hungry. Despite not knowing anything about this little boy’s background or medical history we immediately accepted the placement.
We had until 5 pm that evening to pick up the baby. My wife received the call from our adoption agency at 10 am and by 11:15 am she was holding our son in her arms. I was out of town and took the first available flight back home to meet my baby boy.
Since Luke has come into our lives many people have commented that Luke is so lucky. We have responded to everyone, and will always respond the same way – that we are the lucky ones. Being Luke’s parents is a privilege for which my wife and I will be forever grateful.
We are thankful for the tireless volunteers who helped make the Safe Haven law a reality. In support of Luke, and all the other babies whose lives have been saved by this law, we ask that you share our story in an effort to help parents who cannot care for their newborns.
