After watching the episode of Chicago Fire on January 4, 2023, titled “Something for the Pain” we at the Save Abandoned Babies Foundation fear that there will be future episodes showing a baby being dropped off at a Chicago firehouse baby box, which is not legal in the state of Illinois.

The Law states that the baby is to be handed over to a person in the following facilities:

Hospitals

Fire Departments

Police Departments

Emergency Medical Care Facility

College/University Police Station

The Abandoned Newborn Infant Protection Act offers a protected, legal alternative to unsafe infant abandonment. An unharmed newborn, up to 30 days old, may be handed to staff at a hospital, emergency medical care facility, police station, firehouse, college/University police station, or Illinois State Police district headquarters. No questions need to be answered and there is no fear of prosecution.

We hope that in future episodes that this gross negligence will be corrected for the safety of babies in uncertain situations.

‘Chicago Fire’ Episode Called ‘Misleading’ by CFD

On Wednesday’s episode of NBC’s “Chicago Fire,” a storyline involving an infant safe surrender box sounded the alarm for both the Chicago Fire Department and an advocate for abandoned children, who called the plot “misleading.”

In a scene from the most recent Season 11 episode, the character Sylvie Brett, a paramedic, opens up a delivery containing a large temperature-controlled device, and explains it as “a place for people to safely and anonymously drop their newborns under the state safe haven statute.”

Sign up today or by March 15 in order to receive your event t-shirt!

How it works:

Register to run or walk a 5K, 10K, OR a Half Marathon (21K), at your own pace during the month of April, raise awareness by sharing safe haven information, and fundraise for NSHA’s efforts to prevent infant abandonment in our country! The $35 registration fee includes an event t-shirt mailed to you! (Participants must register by March 15 in order to receive a t-shirt by the first of April. The top individual and team will receive a gift and recognition from NSHA at the conclusion of the event!)

Details:

1.) Register as an individual or team to run/walk a 5K, 10K OR 21K (half marathon) and ask friends and family to help you meet a goal, (such as $200), to help save babies and support parents in need!

2.) Create a fundraiser upon registering. This can be done via Facebook Fundraiser and/or via the event website. (Instructions provided at registration.)

3.) Share NSHA’S social media posts, and information about safe haven, and your goal/fundraising progress throughout the month of April! (Register by March 15 and you will get a shirt and sticker!)

You can also create a fundraising team and work together to get family and friends to help you meet your goal! This is a great way to get more awareness in the community and support for families and babies. And you still get a shirt and sticker!

The individual and team that meet their goal and raise the most money will receive a prize at the end of April!

What if we can prevent abuse and abandonment for babies, keep families together, and show parents that there are safe options through raising awareness of Safe Haven laws, 24/7 support, and resources? What if we can come together as a community, challenge ourselves to get active, share information about saving babies and helping parents in need and fundraise to make a difference?

This is an amazing opportunity to donate and bring awareness to the National Safe Haven Alliance’s mission: to support states’ efforts to prevent infanticide and newborn abandonment through safe haven relinquishments, adoption, temporary placement, parenting and providing 24/7 crisis hotline support for parents in need, (1-888-510-2229).

To date, 4,510 infants have been safely surrendered to Safe Havens nationally.

Over 1608 were abandoned illegally resulting in over 900 deaths.

Please help us continue our passion, commitment, and dedication to spreading awareness of Safe Haven laws.
